The people of Abonnema have not known peace since Yesterday, the 5th of February 2014 as the All Peoples' Congress (APC) registration met unexpected opposition.
There has been series of maiming, butchering and stabbing since yesterday evening. Many young people are now in mangrove forests, bushes and many other unknown places.
According to different sources, the APC in the LGA after sharing their registration materials to agents who are to proceed to their various polling to commence the registration process met stiff opposition as their materials were snatched from them. Young men appeared with canes and flogged anyone who is not ready to let go. As this goes on, some other group of boys went into their closets and came back with weapons of unknown shapes and dimensions and the early evening of the ever bubbling town of Abonnema turned into a graveyard. Everyone scampered, shops and business places abandoned.
Many injuries were recorded in the first phase of the clash (early evening) and as darkness ushered in night, man hunters started the process of hunting down supposed enemies and many others fled through the waterways.
Stories reaching us now has it that one person is dead, another rushed to Port Harcourt, hands amputated, heads broken, flesh torn apart and so many other incidents.
This morning was calm as people went about their businesses, although many shops were not opened, while others opened one door. As we went through the streets, we found political flags, campaign signs and other materials that belong to PDP and APC seriously damaged but by 12pm we saw group of boys running helter-skelter with cars that their windscreens have been damaged and the military men at the Waterfront intercepted some of the boys and handed them over to the Police.
Later in the night, the security operatives imposed a curfew restricting movement from the hours of 9pm till dawn. Most people didn't take the warning seriously and they were given the beating of their lives.
By this morning everywhere has been restored to normalcy and people are beginning to go about their various businesses.
commenting on what happened yesterday, some people said the Local Govt Boss should just go to church and testimony as he narrowly escaped lynching by a mob.
